Helloooo my small but dedicated faction of readers. Ahh, school is in full swing and with it comes a flurry of activity! I have been extremely, extremely busy with a million and one things going on, but i'll get to that later. My most recent BIG news is I finally bit the bullet and put in my application (exactly 5 days ago) to the NYC Teaching Fellowship.
So for those who don't already know, this is a program put in place not too long ago by the NYC Board of Education to try and attract people from all backgrounds to teaching to fill the desperate positions in high-need subject areas and neighborhoods. Fellows can generally expect to teach somewhere in the Bronx or Brooklyn. The subject areas include Math, Science, Special Education, Bilingual Education and ELA. In exchange for you teaching in a high-need subject and area they pay for your subsidized Master's Degree in Education. (you can learn more about the program here... http://www.nycteachingfellows.org/) Guess where I found out about this program? That's right, on the walls of the 7 train. But anyway, I digress. I am verrryyy nervous about finding out if I will be granted an interview or not. The essay was long, not that tedious but definitely taxing, including lots of information, two essays and a resume. I was looking up the statistics about the group who got accepted to this years June program and something like 19,000 applied and only 3,000 were invited into the program. That's about 15%. Thats a scary ratio. I was reading through the testimonials and articles about special teaching fellows and oh boy, I want this soo bad I can taste it. All I really want is to at least get granted an interview, which by the by is no joke. The interviews are a multi-tiered approach having you interviewed in all different settings. Some of the high points include teaching a lesson plan to your peers, drafting a letter to concerned parents about an issue given to you on the spot, and an interview in front of a panel. Oddly enough, this is not the part that worries me. I just want the interview... I want a chance to really shine and represent what I can do. It may sound conceited but I feel like if you have the experience of letting me teach you something, there will be absolutely no doubt as to how well I can teach. And oh! Did I mention? I want to teach high school level Mathematics! It's what I love to teach and tutor in and I have helped a whole bunch of people passed College level exams to get into all sorts of specialized programs. Uggh.. the suspense is literally killing me!
So they say you will find out within 2-4 weeks if you have been selected to come from an interview. Naturally I check the website about 5 thousand times a day to see what the status of my application is. So if you happen to passing by just make a little wish, say a little prayer or simply send some positive energy my way because this is really... everything to me.
In other news, I launched a group through facebook for the club I have become heavily involved in this semester. It's the West African Dance Club (Hunter College Chapter). I was asked to be Vice President by a very good friend of mine Tim, and my other best friend Chris is the Treasurer. We all truly love the culture, the tradition, the energy and experience of the dance and this semester we're kicking it up a whole bunch of notches. Student government is trying to choke us with this paltry budget but we're working through it. There will be a whole bunch of fundraisers to come- so i'll keep you all posted. In the meantime, if you're on facebook look us up. It's just started now, but soon i'll post videos of past performances and bios on the officers so you can see what we're really about. A few of our events this year include visiting a women's shelter as part of a women's empowerment program, and granting a wish as part of the make a wish foundation! It's going to be awessomee so check us out peoples! And don't forget to send me your wishes!
